KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali should dismiss the PAS executive councillor who directed state mosques to conduct special prayers seeking the cancellation of a Selena Gomez concert, a former minister said.
Datuk Zaid Ibrahim went a step further by suggesting an early state election in order to replace the PAS leaders currently in the Selangor administration.
“Selangor need to have a snap election now. We need leaders who would rather have Solat Hajat on corrupt leaders instead of women singers #fb
“Let the people decide if they want corrupt leaders or those hypocrites to rule them #fb,” Zaid wrote on Twitter yesterday.
Selangor religious affairs executive councillor Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi from PAS yesterday ordered that the prayers be held to ask Allah stop the event by the US pop singer.
The Selangor Islamic Religious Department last night disavowed the order, saying it had no involvement in the directive to mosques in the state.
The MB's office yesterday said the order from Ahmad Yunus was a “personal opinion”. Azmin previously said there was no reason to cancel the event as long as the organisers fulfilled the requirements to hold the event.
The Islamist party is seeking to block the concert by claiming that a performance by Gomez, whom they described as “sexy”, would be an affront to Muslims during the month of Syawal.
Gomez’s concert is part of her “Revival” tour and will be held at the Stadium Melawati in Shah Alam.
Concerts held by international musicians and bands in Malaysia frequently see opposition from hardline Muslim groups and PAS Youth in addition to strict regulations from authorities, causing many to give the country a miss during their Southeast Asian tours.
