KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — An unemployed man was sentenced to four months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for voluntarily throwing the al-Quran on the road.
Magistrate Mohd Faizal Ismail handed down the sentence on L.Fabian, 43, after he pleaded guilty to deliberately offend Muslims by throwing a copy of the al-Quran on the road.
He committed the offence at Jalan Chemur, Dang Wangi, here at 5.50pm on July 18 under Section 298 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum prison sentence of one year, or a fine or both, upon conviction.
The court also sentenced Fabian to two months’ imprisonment for failing to produce any identity document during police inspection on the same date and location, at 6.05pm.
The charge under Section 25(1)(n) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 carries a maximum three years’ jail and a fine of up to RM20,000.
Mohd Faizal ordered both sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on July 18.
