KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — PAS Youth has objected today to a concert by Selena Gomez in Shah Alam next week, claiming that the “sexy” American pop singer taints the Muslim month of celebration.

The Islamist party wing’s missionary bureau chairman Hafez Sabri said Gomez’s concert on July 25 coincides with the 20th day of Syawal, the month of Aidilfitri, and allegedly promotes hedonism among youths.

"The appearance of the American born artist who has been synonymous with a sexy appearance would tarnish the nobleness of the month of Syawal that is celebrated with gratitude and penitence by Muslims.

“[It] promotes the culture of hedonism among the younger generations in this country," he said in a statement today.

Claiming the former Disney actress’ appearance can erode the faith, deeds and morals of Muslims who attend, Hafez also urged the Selangor Islamic Religious Council to formally lodge a protest against the concert.

The wing said it was disappointed with the permit issued by authorities for the concert, and urged authorities to instead refer to Shariah-compliant guidelines on entertainment released by the Malaysian Islamic Religious Development Department (Jakim).

The guidelines, first released in 2007, among others impose limitations on stage performances, dress and behaviour codes and gender segregation for attendees.

Last year, Putrajaya said the controversial rules are not enforceable laws, but should “rightfully” be followed by industry players.

Gomez's concert here is part of her “Revival” tour which will see her perform at Stadium Melawati in Shah Alam.

Concerts held by international musicians and bands in Malaysia frequently see opposition from hardline Muslim groups and PAS Youth in addition to strict regulations from authorities, causing many to give the country a miss during their Southeast Asian tours.
