KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 ― PAS urged Muslims today not to become involved with the Islamic State (IS) that it said violated the teachings of Islam, after police confirmed that the terrorist group was behind the grenade attack at a bar in Puchong.

PAS deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said Islam was meant to “save” individuals and nations, also pointing out that extremism was prohibited in all religions.

“In the fight for religion and to practise Islam, Muslims cannot be hasty nor take the easy way.

“Those who want quick victories will act aggressively and abandon all of Islam’s teachings and prohibitions until they paint the wrong picture of Islam,” said Tuan Ibrahim in a statement.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said yesterday that the grenade attack at Movida Bar at a Puchong mall on June 28, which injured eight people, was the IS’ first successful attack in Malaysia.

The national police chief also said 15 male suspects were arrested from June 28 to July 1 following the Movida attack, including two low-ranking police officers based in Penang and Kedah.

The IS attack in Malaysia came amid controversy surrounding Pahang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Osman labelling the DAP and non-Muslims who oppose hudud as “kafir harbi”, a term that refers to infidels who can be killed for going against Islam.

A Pew Research Centre study last year showed 11 per cent of Malaysians were IS sympathisers.
