KUCHING, Feb 27 — Sarawak will find the best long term management method to solve the problem of flash floods that frequently hit Kuching city, said state Housing and Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said a special meeting on the matter would be called next week and would be attended by the relevant agencies such as the Sarawak Irrigation and Drainage Department, Kuching South City Council, Kuching North City Hall, Padawan Municipal Council as well as representatives from housing and real estate agencies.

“The state government views seriously the flash floods as had occurred around Kuching city today as it caused public concern.

“As such effective new solutions for long term must be sought urgently,” he told a media conference here today.

According to him, flood management methods were different from normal ones that are caused by overflowing of the rivers.

He said flash floods were caused by a number of factors such as construction process, clogged drains and not adequate drainage system.

A study should also be carried out to see the effectiveness of the existing drainage system while the local authorities should review the procedures and conditions to be adhered by the developers before their projects were approved. — Bernama
