PETALING JAYA, Oct 25 — After much speculation and a one-month wait, Sunway Pyramid’s “miracle baby” has been named after the shopping mall — Kee Sun Way.

The name of baby Kee was announced at a full moon celebration held at Capriciossa Restaurant, the outlet closest to the walkway where his mother went into labour and gave birth.

The happy father, Kee Foo Ming, 40, said he thought about the name for his son on his way back to Seremban, two days after the baby was born.

“I would usually seek advice from an astrologer before I name my children but for our third child, it seemed like it was fated and the name just came to me,” he said.

Foo Ming said he and his wife, Seow Hui Jun, 35, had also discussed the name with the four “wonder girls” who had helped deliver the baby — Lee Shirley, 15; Wee Tai May, 18; Farhana Mohd Fadzli, 18; and Wong Hui Yu, 19.

“I got them to suggest some names as well but somehow, the name Kee Sun Way stuck in my head. It means ‘double excellency’ in Chinese,” he said.

Among the other names suggested by the girls were Kee Yang Wei and Kee Wei Yuan.

“We were worried Sun Way would be teased about his name, but the father assured us he would explain the significance of the name,” said Farhana.

Foo Ming said when Sun Way is older, he would tell his son about how he came to be named after the shopping mall.

“I believe he would be proud of his name.”

Sunway Shopping Malls chief operating officer Kevin Tan later presented commendation letters to the four girls and other staff who assisted in the delivery.

“Baby Kee has touched the hearts of many when he decided to arrive at our mall and I believed in my team as they are trained to handle any medical situation,” he said.

Tan said this was the first time such a joyous incident had occurred at the mall since it opened in 1997.

“We have planned many events and this is the first time we are organising a baby’s full moon celebration, fully sponsored by Sunway,” he said.

Baby Kee and his family were showered with gifts, vouchers and a lifetime free-parking card at the mall.

“Foo Ming told me it was his first visit to the mall and he did not expect such situation to take place. I hope with this free-parking gift, the family would visit us more often as they did not have enough time to shop during their last visit,” Tan joked.

Baby Kee, who made headlines locally as well as in Singapore, was born at the entrance of Sunway Pyramid on Sept 22 at 4.15pm, with the help of the four girls.

The family had driven from Seremban to visit the mall and Sunway Lagoon during the school holidays.
