KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — A group led by PKR’s Batu MP Chua Tian Chang and PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad ignored police warnings against taking part in the #KitaLawan gathering in Kuala Lumpur today.

The rally was held in support of jailed Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to news portal The Malaysian Insider (TMI), protesters gathered at the Sogo shopping complex in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman before marching to KLCC where they brought traffic to a standstill at the Jalan Ampang and Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection.

TMI reported that rallygoers were seen waving black flags and heard calling for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step down.

In a press conference held at the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association Building, one of the rally organisers, Mandeep Singh, was quoted by The Star Online as saying that the group had rejected the offer by the police for the rally to be held at a stadium on March 7.

Mandeep added that a total of 50 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had pledged to join the rally today.

According to TMI, Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainol Samah had warned the public against participating in the rally, which was deemed illegal as the organisers had not applied for a permit.

The police are reported to be considering taking action on the rally organisers under Section 143 of the Penal Code.

On February 10, the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s 2014 ruling that reversed Anwar’s acquittal of sodomising former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, and sentenced the Permatang Pauh lawmaker to five years’ jail.
