PUTRAJAYA, May 24 ― Retired Customs staff can still make a contribution to the nation by becoming facilitators to explain the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said although more than 500 people in the peninsula and another 200 in Sabah and Sarawak had been trained for the purpose, the number was still not enough.

“The retirees can also help by explaining to the people to make them understand better and will not be influenced with accusations hurled by irresponsible quarters on GST,” he said at a function for Customs officers and staff going on retirement here tonight.

He said more than 160 countries had implemented GST and that showed it brought benefit to the people.

Meanwhile, Customs Director-General Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad said retired Customs staff could become the eye and ears for the department, like providing information on smuggling, etc. ― Bernama
