GEORGE TOWN, May 21 — Independent candidate in the Bukit Gelugor by-election, Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan, who flung himself at Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s car yesterday is contemplating suing the leader for injuries allegedly sustained during the encounter.
The lawyer, who has been admitted to a private hospital, claimed he was hospitalised due to a hip bone fracture, a broken rib and a lung infection.
“I’m contemplating suing the chief minister for causing these injuries, it would not have happened if he had met with me yesterday,” Abu Backer told reporters from his hospital bed.
Accompanied by his lawyer, Abu Backer claimed he had only wanted to talk to Lim but was stopped from doing so.
“When they didn’t allow me into the state assembly, I had wanted to leave but then I noticed that the DAP Bukit Gelugor candidate Ramkarpal Singh Deo was allowed inside and that’s when I lost it,” he said.
Yesterday, Abu Backer had tried to block the chief minister’s car from leaving the state assembly compound in his attempt to talk to Lim.
Six security guards tried to stop him but Abu Backer managed to slip past them to kick the vehicle before flinging himself at the car.
He then slid to the ground and lay there moaning in pain for about 30 minutes before an ambulance took him to the Penang Hospital for treatment.
Speaking today, Lim said he had wanted to get down from his car to talk to Abu Backer but thought better of it.
“When I saw he was acting wildly, running here and there, I thought it was wiser to stay in the car,” he said.
Abu Backer said he had acted wildly because he felt it was unjust that Ramkarpal was allowed to meet with Lim while he was not allowed to do so.
Abu Backer expects to compete in the by-election this weekend despite his problems.
“I will not give up because of this,” he said in between of groans of pain.
Abu Backer is one of two independent candidates facing against Ramkarpal and Parti Cinta Malaysia’s Huan Cheng Guan in the May 25 by-election.
Ramkarpal is widely expected to succeed his father Karpal Singh in the by-election.
