GEORGE TOWN, Feb 19 ― Police smashed a heroin manufacturing syndicate and seized RM4.5 million worth of drugs in an operation Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin dubbed Penang’s biggest narcotics bust this year.
The senior policeman told reporters the syndicate had a drug lab at a condominium in Green Lane here is believed to have supplied heroin to various locations within the country, especially at entertainment outlets.
He said the police confiscated a total of 73.5kg of heroin number 3; 9.07kg of heroin number 4; 163.93kg of caffeine; 18g of syabu and 69 Erimin 5 pills from the apartment unit in the late-night raid that kicked off on Sunday.
The police also seized five vehicles ― a Nissan Grand Livina, a BMW, a Mercedes Benz, a Peugeot and a Vespa motorbike ― along with four watches and cash in both Malaysian ringgit and Chinese yuan.
Four people comprising two Malaysian men, a Malaysian woman and a female Chinese national have been arrested and are on remand till February 21 to help in investigations.
The two local men have between five and six previous criminal records, Bakri said.
The police are investigating the case under section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
Bakri said police believe there are other members of the one-year old syndicate who are still at large.
The raid was the third led by the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting) since it was set up last month.
