KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — The fate of the two Samaritans who went to the aid of a snatch-theft victim and accidentally ran their car over her will be known next week when police submit the investigation files to the deputy public prosecutor’s office.
Police had investigated the duo, aged 21 and 23, for reckless driving.
Two suspects alleged to have tried to snatch a bag from Shahrinawati Abu Bakar, 30, an AirAsia X ground staff member, are being investigated for causing hurt during a robbery.
Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Amiruddin Jamaluddin said police were expected to submit the investigation papers next week.
“It will be up to the deputy public prosecutor whether or not to charge the Samaritans with reckless driving. Maybe they can advise on the next course of action,” he said.
Amiruddin said the two snatch-theft suspects caught on August 30 and September 2 were under remand until tomorrow.
“We have extended the remand order on both suspects and they are expected to be charged soon,” he said.
The first suspect — a 22-year-old unemployed man who was ridin pillion rider and had tried to snatch Shahrinawati’s bag — was detained in Taman Muhibah, Ampang.
The second suspect — a bus driver aged 25 — was detained in Taman Cempaka, also in Ampang.
He has confirmed he was the rider, and identified the first suspect as his friend, but stopped short of admitting to the crime.
Both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.
Shahrinawati had parked her car outside the Palm Villa condominium in Ampang at about 2am on Aug 28 when the incident took place.
She was a few steps from her home when two men on a motorcycle tried to grab her bag. She fell and screamed.
A car with the two men in it passed the area and the driver was believed to have heard her screams and seen the incident in his rear-view mirror.
Without hesitation, he reversed the car at high speed — not realising that Shahrinawati was on the ground — and ran over her.
They took her to hospital but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The two men on the motorcycle escaped but one of them was believed to have been injured.
