KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — An attempt by a prison warden to smuggle drugs to inmates in a prison was foiled when a routine check found the drug (syabu) hidden in his socks.
The Deputy Director of Prison Data, Department of Prisons (JPM), Supri Hashim said the checks carried out on the warden at the Batu Gajah Moral Rehabilitation Centre, Perak last Friday also found five sticks of cigarettes hidden in his underwear.
“During the inspection by JPM personnel at about 7am, several small packets containing Methaphetamine drugs or syabu, which were hidden in his socks, and cigarettes hidden in his underwear were discovered.
“According to procedure, we hand over the case to the police for further action,” he said when contacted by Bernama, here today.
Supri said such action was considered as a malpractice and firm action should be taken to prevent such cases from recurring.
“Any personnel found to smuggle in cigarettes will be sacked, what more for smuggling drugs like this,” he said.
Supri said the 100 per cent routine inspection on JPM staff was carried out daily.
Meanwhile, the president of the Kuala Lumpur Social Development, Crime Prevention and Anti-Dadah Voluntary Organisation (Pencegah) Jeevan S. Ramamurthy said the JPM must carry out X-ray screenings on prison personnel on duty.
“This is not a new issue, the JPM must enhance inspection on the staff on duty including X-ray screening like the one at the KL International Airport because there were also wardens who smuggle the drugs by hiding them in their anus,” he said. — Bernama
