KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Egyptian security forces, looking for fighters, entered a house in Mansoura in which Malaysian students were living but no one was harmed.
Minister Counsellor in Cairo Shaiful Anuar Mohammad told The Malay Mail this was the only incident involving Malaysians and that none of the 3,300 Malaysians living and studying in Egypt were harmed following violence between security forces and supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi.
He also said there was no damage to property belonging to Malaysians or the embassy there.
Shaiful Anuar said some students were taking their exams and were continuing with their studies “even though we are trying to postpone this so they can return to Malaysia”.
He also said Petronas had scaled down its operations and moved its Malaysian staff out of Egypt.
Bernama reported on Sunday that Malaysian students were waiting to sit for their repeat exams.
The director of the Home Affairs and Student Development Department at the Higher Education Ministry, Ibrahim Ali, said there were 11,145 Malaysians studying in Egypt, but 7,845 of them had returned home for the semester break.
In a statement, the Education Ministry said Education Malaysia Egypt (EME) received confirmation of the postponement of exams from the Egyptian deputy minister of higher education.
It said the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education would take action against any university that did not comply with the directive.
The Education Ministry and Wisma Putra had also established safe homes to facilitate the evacuation of Malaysian students if needed.
