PETALING JAYA, Aug 2 — The man who tried to jump off the ledge from the 15th floor of Millennium Square Condominium here on Wednesday has been remanded to facilitate police investigations.
Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohamed said the 32-year-old man had sought psychiatric help in the past.
“He has a history of receiving psychiatric treatment. The case is being investigated for attempted suicide,” said Arjunaidi.
“We will also send him for psychiatric evaluation.”
On Wednesday evening, The Malay Mail investigative journalist Haresh Deol received a text message from the man saying he had information to share before wanting to jump off the building.
The man, an ex-croupier who just got a job as a waiter in a fast-food outlet, had visited Haresh last week to discuss wrongdoings involving his previous company.
Haresh alerted Arjunaidi over the matter before rushing to the scene. Haresh was then forced to play “negotiator” for almost an hour as the man insisted he only wanted to speak to Haresh.
The episode created a stir at Millennium Square.
The man claimed he feared for his life and that someone would “beat him up” or “kill him”, leaving him no choice but to end his life.
After buying time, Haresh managed to grab the man by his collar and leg and pulled him to safety. The police and fire rescue personnel then rushed to pin the man down and handcuff him.
Haresh has given his statement to the Sea Park police station here following the incident.
