PETALING JAYA, Aug 1 — Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye told The Malay Mail that it is not just up to police to fight gun crimes.
Speculating that the guns could have been smuggled, Lee said if this were true the burden did not just fall on the police.
“This is a matter that needs to be thoroughly investigated by the agencies such as the authorities on the borders and along the coastline.”
He also said when it came to gun control, Malaysia already had strict laws, unlike in America where guns could be more easily bought.
Lee was responding a current spate of violent crimes involving guns and said the MCPF had received calls and feedback from the public worried that the country was sliding to a state of lawlessness.
In a statement yesterday, Lee said the public was not reassured by another high-powered task force formed to investigate and track down those responsible for the shootings.
However, Lee said the public must seriously consider Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s proposal for new legislation containing tough anti-crime measures, which the prime minister said needs to be introduced to replace the abolished Emergency Ordinance Act.
Lee also said the MCPF and Asli would be jointly organising a forum on “Current Legislation and Other Measures” to fight serious and violent crimes more effectively on August 24 at the Sunway Resort Hotel in Subang Jaya.
