PETALING JAYA, July 31 — Kuala Lumpur city police have established that a hired killer had assassinated Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi in a busy carpark on Monday.
They believe the style of execution reflected the work of an assassin, believed to be a local.
Police are looking at various theories to zero in on the motive of the killing which occurred after Najadi held a meeting over a land deal.
KL police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh (pic) said police have retrieved recordings from the four closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) at the carpark where the shooting took place.
“From the CCTV footage, we have a clear image of the shooter but the image of the two accomplices are not so clear. We are looking at more images,” he said.
Mohmad said initial investigations indicated it was the work of a professional.
Police are in the midst of recording statements from eight witnesses, including the car park attendant and the individual who met Ahmad Najadi earlier.
Ahmad Najadi’s wife, Cheong Mei Kuen, 49, was shot in her left wrist and right thigh.
She is in a stable condition and receiving treatment at Prince Court Medical Centre.
She will have her statement recorded by the police once she has recovered.
Police are also tracking down the Proton Waja taxi that the shooter and the two accomplices escaped in.
“We have located the company that owns the taxi and investigations are underway.”
The incident on Monday took place at the carpark near the Kuan Yin temple at Lorong Ceylon 4.
Ahmad Najadi and his wife spent several minutes at the temple after the meeting.
They were shot at from a range of 20 metres by the gunman, who was believed to have been waiting for them at the car park.
The murder of Bahrain-born Ahmad Najadi has sparked an outcry over rising gun crimes in the country. Since April this year, there have been 15 reported cases.
