KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — The Malaysia Handball Federation (MaHF) will join forces with the Federal Territories Sports Council (FTSC) and the National Sports Council (NSC) to form a “tribunal committee” to get to the bottom of the alleged boozing and gang rape incident which took place at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Village last week.
Three Federal Territories handball players were picked up by police on Sunday following the rape allegation of a 19-year-old player turned chaperone.
MaHF president Pandak Ahmad said this case must be investigated thoroughly as there seems to be “more than meets the eye”.
“We only know what has been reported but we want to know what else took place and who else were involved,” he said.
Pandak said the committee would be headed by the FTSC director and consist of eight members.
“We will have a lawyer sitting in the committee to observe the investigations.”
He said the committee, scheduled to meet this week, would investigate the team manager, coaches and the chaperone involved in the incident.
“The committee will also the victim to give her statement but the three players who are arrested will be excluded as it would clash with police investigations,” he said.
MaHF deputy Jacob Matthews was unsure as to why the players and officials were still at the Games Village when they should have left for home instead.
He also questioned the lax security since the incident took place at a public university (UPM).
“Was it a directive by the state sports council to keep the athletes at the Games Village despite having completed their matches? I don’t know,” he said.
“It is also baffling as to how the athletes were able to drink at the basketball court without being noticed. But for now, let’s leave it to the cops.”
