The exhibition comprises 35 watercolour works predominantly of his beloved state where he sees the beauty in its culture, heritage, architecture and natural assets.

“I feel a strong connection of these scenes that have inspired me to pick up my brushes and paint,” said the 34-year-old, a graduate from the Penang Institute of Multimedia and Design.

“Penang is filled with rich Nanyang culture that is multicultural and fascinating. I have learnt to cherish and appreciate all that I have around me.”

A member of Penang Urban Sketchers, Koay enjoys live sketching the most and loves to use watercolour to illustrate old streets and buildings.

He was a lecturer at a local college before quitting in 2014 to focus on his graphic design work and to brush up his art practice.

Gallery owner Koay Soo Kau said the highlight of the show was Koay’s sceneries that would “mesmerise” the viewer.

“He shows the potential of a professional artist with his beautiful play of the colours. He excels in the control of the transparency and fluidity of the medium.

“With perseverance and sincerity, he should be able to achieve his aim to be the top artist in this part of the world.”

Guest-of-honour and Speaker of the Penang State Legislative Assembly Datuk Law Choo Kiang said local artists needed the private and public sectors to walk the talk when it came to supporting arts and culture.

“We should not just talk but support our local artists, young and old, through all aspects and ensure their artistic abilities do not go to waste,” he added.

“We should show our artists that their hard work and talent in producing such outstanding works be fully appreciated and worthy of adding to their own collection.”

Law joined other collectors in purchasing several paintings in support of Koay.

The gallery is open daily from 11am to 6pm. Admission is free. Koay’s exhibition runs until Feb 4.
