GEORGE TOWN, June 23 — If you are already a fan of China House and their magnificent cake table, good news.

The cake table is now two-tiered so there is more space for additional cakes, an extra section for savouries and a soon-to-come side table of fresh fruit salads and pastries.

Previously the restaurant offered about 50 different cakes and desserts daily, but this additional space means there will now be over 85 different cakes, cookies, pastries, puddings and pies to tempt you.

The number of savoury pastries will also be increased to a dozen different types each day to include a variety of turnovers, empanadas, pies and puff pastries.

For the health conscious (but why?), there will be a side table with fresh fruit salads for a refreshing difference.

Meet the chef

If you ever wondered who is behind all these delightful desserts, meet Chef Azila Razak who is more affectionately known as GG in the restaurant.

She first joined Kopi Cine in Stewart Lane back in late 2009 as the only chef there.

A few years later, Kopi Cine shifted to its current location and expanded into several establishments under one roof called China House.

Within the interlinked compound of three shophouses are Kopi C, BTB, Bakery and The Canteen.

Today, Azila leads a team of nine pastry chefs to produce 80 different desserts each day.

“On busy days, we have to produce up to 200 cakes a day,” she said.

Azila wasn’t always a pastry chef as she started out in the hospitality industry as a waitress in a hotel back in 1992.

The 41-year-old worked her way up and before long, found herself in the kitchen baking pastries, bread and cakes.

“I have always loved baking cakes and desserts so when I joined Kopi Cine, I started working on unique cakes and desserts,” she said.

Today, she monitors the quality of the desserts produced each day to make sure they are up to par while constantly coming up with new temptations.

China House also recently introduced the afternoon tea sets that come with two scones served with jam and whipped cream, finger sandwiches, cake from the cake table and a pot of tea.

There are now several ongoing promotions at China House too.

If you have always wanted to try two different flavours of cake but are concerned over the large portions, you can now ask for two smaller slices of different flavours for the price of one regular slice.

For those purchasing a whole cake, they can now buy 10 different slices of cake to make up a whole cake for the price of nine slices.
