GEORGE TOWN, Oct 25 — A Toronto-based company opened its new Global Business Services (GBS) office in Penang as part of its expansion in Malaysia.

The company, Celestica Inc, that has a presence in Kedah and Johor, expanded here with an aim to grow further in the next 18 months.

Its senior vice-president Rodney Bergman said they currently have a workforce of about 100 in Penang and have plans to further increase it to 200.

“We currently have a total 250 employees in two facilities and we are hoping to grow to 400 in the next 18 months,” he told reporters at the official opening of the company offices at One Precinct in Bayan Baru here today.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who officiated the opening, said Celestica’s decision to open in Penang showed that the state has the right formula to support the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.

“Penang is committed to attracting more world class business process outsourcing companies such as Celestica,”

“With this, the Penang global business services centre of excellence is now open for business,” he said.
