KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — The online hiring activity in Malaysia’s hospitality sector grew by four per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in July 2016, the first positive annual growth recorded in the past 12 months, according to Monster Employment Index (MEI).

The MEI is a monthly gauge of online job posting activity, based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities. It is culled from a large representative selection of career websites and online job listings in Malaysia.

In terms of occupational groups, the MEI data showed that online recruitment among hospitality and travel professionals recorded the highest y-o-y growth of 13 per cent in July 2016.

“A recent initiative by Tourism Malaysia to position Malaysia as a desirable destination has helped drive demand for employees within the hospitality sector,” said Monster.com APAC and Middle East Managing Director, Sanjay Modi.

In a statement today, he said the sector is likely to continue to thrive amid the poor economic climate, with strong support from the tourism promotion board.

However, the data showed that overall, the e-recruitment activity in the country dropped 17 per cent y-o-y in July 2016 as compared to the 13 per cent fall recorded in the same period of the previous year.

Sanjay expects challenging global headwinds to continue stunting Malaysia’s economic growth and slow hiring activities in multiple sectors.  “According to AmBank’s Research, this slowing trend is likely to stick around, so we can expect to see slow hiring in the coming months,” he added. — Bernama
