KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Ride-sharing service Grab today implored all parties not to be violent in expressing themselves, after one of its drivers was assaulted by taxi drivers at Mid Valley Megamall yesterday.
“Grab (formerly known as MyTeksi) does not condone any form of violence. With regards to the recent attack on one of our Grab drivers at Midvalley Megamall, we have extended our full support and assisted him in the necessary steps which includes medical check-up and the car repairs,” the company said in a statement.
“Moving forward, we hope that all parties concerned will prioritise the safety of both drivers and passengers at all times and employ peaceful means to state their opinion.”
Yesterday, Brickfields police chief ACP Sharul Othman Mansor informed the media that the 35-year-old Grab driver was allegedly intimidated by a group of angry cabbies during a pickup at 2am.
The driver was reportedly berated by the taxi driver who attempted to confiscate the driver’s mobile phone and later broke the car’s window and kicked the vehicle.
Several other taxi drivers later joined in kicking the car.
Recent similar cases include an incident on June 20 when an Iranian woman and her child were reprimanded by a cabbie after she had hailed an Uber at KL Sentral and on April 10, when a driver said to be offering ride-sharing services and his foreign passengers were harassed by a group of angry cabbies in Bukit Bintang.
On June 18, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) announced that it had submitted a proposal that seeks to “legalise current technology-driven demand patterns to regulate e-hailing service such as Uber and Grab”.
In its statement, Grab added that it welcomed the initiative to restructure the taxi and transportation industry by encouraging new business models that leverage on technology.
“We believe that the proposal SPAD submits to the Government to legalise and regulate ride-hailing services, represents an integrated solution that ensures a level playing field for all while encouraging a healthy competition and progressive direction for the industry, which will benefit passengers, drivers and the country as a whole,” it said.
