KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — New Senator Datuk Seri Devamany S. Krishnasamy said he is yet to learn his responsibilities as deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, following the announcement of his appointment earlier today.

Speaking to reporters after being sworn in at Dewan Negara, the MIC leader said his selection was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s way of helping the Indian-based party return to its former glory.

“Not yet, I will have to go and sit down with the PM. And talk to him,” Devamany said when asked about his duties.

He said, however, that he wanted to look into empowering the poor as part of his new position.

Devamany is returning to the position he held from 2004 to 2008. He is currently the Perak State Legislative Assembly Speaker, a position Devamany said will resign “as soon as possible”.

Devamany’s appointment is part of the Cabinet reshuffle announced by Najib in a press conference at his office earlier this evening.

The reshuffle comes after BN’s comfortable wins at the Sarawak state election as well as the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.
