KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 — A daring robbery by a gang of four who rammed their stolen vehicle into a moneychanger’s outlet at a shopping centre in Cheras yesterday ended with one of them gunned down by a security guard.

Police believe the gang must have been involved in several other high-profile robberies last year because of the manner they carried out the heist.

City CID chief SAC Zainuddin Ahmad said the four men in full-face helmets reversed the Naza Citra into the entrance of the outlet at AEON Taman Maluri Shopping Centre at about 11am.

The outlet was on the second floor and was accessible through the car park.

“Two of the robbers, armed with machetes, ordered a worker to hand over everything from the cash register while the other two stood guard,”

“After grabbing the money, they ran towards two motorcycles parked nearby.”

Zainuddin said a security guard from a nearby jewellery store opened fire when he saw the robbers fleeing.

“Three shots were fired and one hit a robber in the chest. He died at the scene,” he said.

“Two of the men fled on a motorcycle while the other escaped on foot.”

Zainuddin said police believed the four men planned the robbery the previous day.

“They must have surveyed the area and planned their escape route. The motorcycles could have been parked there a few days earlier,” he said.

The Naza Citra was reported missing in Jinjang last year.

He  said the dead man, aged 31, was also wanted in connection with a similar robbery.

“We believe they were involved in another robbery at a moneychanger’s in June,” he said.

Police found two machetes at the scene.
