KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — A police crackdown on suspected local militants in training with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has exposed followers of salafi jihadist ideology who are against any form of a secular government in Malaysia, The Star reported.
“The militant members whom we have interrogated are salafi jihadists,” the paper quoted Datuk Ayob Khan, assistant director of the counter terrorism division at special branch, as saying.
“They strongly feel the current Malaysian Government, whom they regard as secular, can only be ousted through jihad wars,” Ayob was further quoted as saying.
ISIL is a militant group in Iran and Syria.
According to the BBC, the group is seen to be working towards an Islamic emirate that encompasses both Syria and Iraq.
