IPOH, June 20 — Between January and June this year, 24 rank-and-file policemen in Perak are suspected to have been involved in drug abuse, Perak Police chief Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said today.
“They will be penalised just like civilians under the Dangerous Drugs Act and, if found guilty, they can be sacked,” he told reporters after the monthly assembly at the Perak Police headquarters here.
Also, at the event, the ASP insignia was affixed on 51 police officers, including Federal Reserve Unit inspectors, who were promoted on a personal-to-holder basis.
Acryl Sani said drug abuse by police personnel was disappointing because, as law enforcers, they should not get involved even when faced with the stress of daily life.
“Do not consume drugs as the easy way to overcome stress. As humans, we have to think logically, in a matured way, and be able to control our emotions and stress through various ways,” he said.
Acryl Sani said the police force had several approaches to handle this problem, including through the implementation of the Discipline and Drug Control System (SKDD).
He said all the heads of department and district police chiefs should be accountable and responsible for any misconduct by anyone under their supervision, by closing monitoring the SKDD files. He also said that between January and May this year, seven police officers and personnel were probed for corruption.
Acryl urged all police officers and rank-and-file policemen to monitor their own finances and spend prudently to avoid being drawn into corruption.
“Spend prudently so that you do not become indebted to banks or unlicenced creditors as this would have implications not just on yourself and your career but also on your families,” he said. — Bernama
