GEORGE TOWN, June 17 — A detainee who was to be charged in the Magistrate’s Court for having drugs today, escaped from custody when the police vehicle ferrying him arrived in the compound of the court here.

North East District Police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the suspect, Mohamad Faisal Naina Mohamad, 40, who was handcuffed together with 14 other detainees, suddenly managed to free himself and escape at 8.40am, after alighting from the vehicle.

“The suspect who was at the end of the row of detainees suddenly managed to free his hands of the handcuffs and escaped by climbing the fence,” he told reporters here, today.

Asked on the possibility of the handcuff used was unlocked or loose, Mior Faridaltrash said it was still being investigated as the investigating officer had recorded the statements of two policemen who escorted the detainees and they were also investigated on suspicion of negligence.

Mior Faridaltrash said police had launched ‘Ops Kesan’ to track down the suspect, and members of the public with information can contact the nearest police station.

He said the suspect whose last address was Bagan Jermal, Butterworth was 170cm tall, had short straight hair, wore a gray T-shirt and dark pants.

The man was detained in Taman Tun Sardon for having two tubes of heroin on Friday and was remanded from June 14 till today. — Bernama
