PETALING JAYA, June 14 — With El Nino expected to set in this month, the Meteorological Department predicts an average rise of temperatures to as high as 34°C to 36°C until September.
The average temperature in Malaysia is between 23°C and 32°C.
In June, temperatures in West Malaysia will average between 31.6°C and 33.6°C, July at 31.2°C to 33.2°C, August at 31°C to 33.3°C and September, 30.7°C to 33.2°C.
Temperatures for Sabah and Sarawak in June will be an average of 31.4°C to 32.8°C, July at 31.1°C to 32.6°C, August at 31.3°C to 32.7°C and September at 31.1°C to 32.3°C.
The prediction is based on temperatures recorded during the El Nino phenomenon in 1997, when maximum temperatures rose by 0.5 to 2°C.
The nation is currently experiencing a dry spell due to the south-west monsoon which will inevitably cause maximum temperatures to be higher.
There will also be more days without rain as the south-west monsoon causes significant direct sunlight heatwaves.
However, MET predicts that isolated thunderstorms and rainfall will still take place along the east coast states and also within inland areas of Sabah and Sarawak.
The MET predicts that Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Negri Sembilan will experience no rainfall throughout the coming week, while Perak, Malacca, Selangor, Penang and Johor will experience isolated showers.
Selangor youth, sports, infrastructure and public amenities committee chairman Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi said raw water channeled from mining pools into reservoirs was one of the state government's contingency plans to deal with El Nino.
“The water supply from the mining pools can last up to five months without cloud seeding activities, which is also part of our contingency plan for raw water supply,” he said.
“Cloud seeding over mining pools, if ever necessary, will allow the water supply to last longer than five to six months.”
Checks by Malay Mail yesterday revealed that water level at the Sungai Selangor dam was at 43.71 per cent, while the Klang Gates and Semenyih dams were above 80 per cent.
The Langat dam was at 71.06 per cent while the Sungai Tinggi dam was at 71.10 per cent.
