KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 — The body of missing 11-year-old Khairul Azriel Abdul Razak, who fell into a monsoon drain near his school on Wednesday, was recovered in a reservoir at Kampung Berembang, Ampang, yesterday.
The search and rescue team led by Ampang police located the victim's body under a pile of rubbish at 4.45pm, 2km from where he fell.
Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Khairuldin Saad said the victim's body was identified by his brother, Mohd Asyraf, at the police headquarters, less than half an hour after the discovery.
“We have sent his body to Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and a post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow (Saturday) morning,” Khairuldin said.
Khairul Azriel was waiting for his mother at a bus stop in front SK Ampang when a schoolmate asked him to pick up a ball which had fallen into the drain.
The heavy rain caused him to lose his grip and he slipped into the drain, which leads to the Ampang River.
A search and rescue operation by more than 60 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, Rela, and the Malaysian Civil Defence Department took more than 48 hours before his body was found. The authorities scoured three areas, starting from the school and going as far as Masjid Jamek.
Khairuldin said although they had searched the reservoir on Thursday, the high water level had disrupted their view.
“Initially we thought his body may have drifted all the way to Klang River, and although we have placed a search team there, we still had hopes of finding him not far away from where he fell.”
