KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — Rain showers fell across areas of the Klang Valley this evening, which the Meteorological Department attributed to cloud-seeding exercises conducted in parts of Selangor.

With rainfall in some of the targeted areas, the department’s national weather centre director Muhammad Helmi Abdullah declared the operations a success.

“We had already foreseen that Selangor is a good candidate for the operation,” he was quoted as saying by The Star on its website today.

Helmi was unable to say, however, if the amount rain was sufficient to alleviate the ongoing water crisis sweeping the Klang Valley.

The rain also came as a thick haze enveloped parts of the Klang Valley, with unhealthy air quality reported at Port Klang and Seri Manjung today while several other areas were also approaching unhealthy levels of air pollutant index (API) readings.

Yesterday, utility firm Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) expanded its water rationing exercise to cover six districts in Selangor and affecting 2.2 million residents in the state.

This was in addition to earlier rationing in Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang that was implemented after the closure of water treatment plants Cheras Batu 11 and Bukit Tampoi.
