KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — The search and rescue operation for the 40 people still missing when their boat capsized near Tanjung Siang, Kota Tinggi, Johor, last Thursday continues today with the search expanded to 15 nautical miles from the location of the capsize.

Tanjung Sedili Maritime Enforcement chief, Maritime Commander Amran Daud said the operation, which resumed at 7am today, involved about 30 personnel in three vessels and two boats belonging to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).

“The search for the victims continues today although the chance of finding them alive is slim,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

The boat was carrying 44 Indonesians who were returning home to Batam, Indonesia for Aidilfitri when it capsized around 10pm after being battered by huge waves during bad weather.

Four of the victims were rescued by a group of fishermen and the MMEA. — Bernama
