JOHOR BARU, July 8 — Germany proved their supremacy as the world’s top team when they emerged as the champion of the semifinals of the World Hockey League after beating Argentina 4-2.

In the closely fought match, Germany opened scoring in the 22nd minute through legendary striker Christopher Zeller who received a beautiful pass from Mo Fuerste.

However, Argentina equalised through a penalty corner taken by their penalty corner specialist Gonzalo Peillat in the 27th minute.

Five minutes later Jochen Hempel’s wards were ahead 2-1 when Florian Fuchs scored a field goal from nine metres to beat goalie Juan Vivaldi.

Argentina fought back to again equalise 2-2 through Matias Paredes before the interval.

The game was closely fought until the last five minutes with the score tied at 2-2 but Florian Fuchs dashed the hopes of Carlos Retegui’s wards when he scored the German field goal in the 68th minute after receiving a cross from Christopher Ruehr.

The Argentine team who were demoralised by the goal could only watch when Christopher Wesley hit a high “reverse stick” over goalie Juan Vivaldi to ensure Germany the championship. — Bernama
