LONDON, Jan 21 — Johnny Depp says appearing in British comedy The Fast Show was one of his “favourite things”.
The 51-year-old has had a hugely successful movie career with films like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. But the actor has made the somewhat surprising admission that his favourite part was actually a cameo appearance in a British TV show, The Fast Show.
“It was absolutely one of my proudest achievements,” he told British newspaper The Mirror. “No question. It was one of my favourite things, to have been on the last Fast Show.”
His small screen appearance occurred in 1997, with Johnny playing a customer who was subjected to a series of incredibly personal questions from the innuendo-loving tailors Ken and Kenneth, played by Paul Whitehouse and Mark Williams. The sketch show ran for three years on the BBC and the episode saw Johnny utter the character’s catchphrase “ooh, suits you” as he thrusted with the pair.
The actor has always loved the British sense of humour and has based many of his movie characters on people from England, including Captain Jack Sparrow, who resembles Rolling Stones musician Keith Richards.
And Johnny admits that his latest role Charles Mortdecai is based on another famous Brit — the late actor Peter Sellers.
“It was a great salute to those actors that were able to pull off that kinda comedy in a caper film,” he explained.
“Peter Sellers certainly, and a great deal is based on Terry Thomas. He’s always been a favourite. There’s so many accents in this country. There’s the West Country accent and I’ve spent a lot of time in London. You end up sitting with some aristocrat — having spent time around that sort of men helped make Mortdecai’s accent.” — Cover Media
