KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 — The government has urged authorities, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to take firm action against the growing spread of fake news on fuel and electricity prices.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that, so far, the MCMC has identified 96 pieces of false content on social media related to the issue.
In a video message today, he said the dissemination of such misinformation is occurring as the country faces extraordinary challenges arising from the global energy crisis, and could threaten stability as well as mislead the public.
“We are operating under extraordinary circumstances with mounting challenges, yet this does not stop those who continue to lie, spread hatred, sabotage, and betray,” he said.
Anwar added that firm action must be taken, as the dissemination of fake news is an irresponsible act that impacts the public.
“We have no choice but to urge the authorities, whether the PDRM or the MCMC, to take action. So far, the MCMC has identified 96 pieces of fake content on fuel and electricity prices on social media,” he said.
He stressed that spreading false information while the public is under economic pressure constitutes a form of betrayal against the nation and society.
“These acts are carried out solely to secure narrow political gains, with no regard for their impact on the people,” he said.
In this regard, Anwar urged the public to exercise greater caution when receiving and sharing information, especially on social media.
“I would like to once again call on the people to be discerning, verify the news, seek accurate facts, and work together to monitor the situation, check carefully, and take steps to safeguard our families, communities, and the nation,” he said.
He also prayed that all the government’s efforts to tackle the current challenges are blessed, and that the country remains under the protection of Allah SWT. — Bernama
