KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — Still on the fence whether or not to go out and cast your vote this coming May 9?

How about some nasi lemak and a piping hot glass of teh tarik for brunch, absolutely free, after casting your vote as a reward?

The BIG Group, a franchise of restaurants and supermarkets, are offering Malaysians exactly that, on polling day, until they run out.

The chain posted the offer on its Instagram account today, saying: “9th of May, go out early to vote and have brunch on us. Nothing unites Malaysians like a good nasi lemak.”

Yesterday, the Election Commission (EC) announced that polling will be on May 9, and Putrajaya has announced the day as a public holiday.

It is unclear why the EC chose to conduct polling on a Wednesday as its chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah, declined to take questions during yesterday’s announcement.

The midweek polling day is rare, but not unprecedented.

However, this would be the first-ever general election to take place on a Wednesday since 1959.
