KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 ― Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced today that 45 per cent of the RM9 billion LRT3 project will be awarded to Bumiputera companies.

He said the contracts would be awarded on merit under the Bumiputera Agenda Action Council’s (MTAB) “carve out and compete” initiative to bolster competitiveness.

“Forty-five per cent of the total contracts will be awarded to Bumiputera companies. Bumiputera companies have to compete among themselves to get the contract for respective projects based on merit,” Najib said in his speech after chairing the MEB meeting.

He also said the initiave has helped various Bumiputera companies gain a total RM50.8 billion from mega projects in the country.

Among the projects Najib listed were the frst two lines of the MRT project where 45 per cent or RM22.4 billion was given to Bumiputera companies, and the Pan Borneo Highway project where RM8 billion or 53 per cent.

Najib who is also finance minister said the government took such measures to help push the Bumiputera agenda forward and subsequently, boost the country’s economy.

“With initiatives like this, we hope to see more Bumiputera entrepreneurs around the country move forward and be competitive.

“The strategic cooperation between various government and corporate agencies that we witness today will ensure that the status of Bumiputera will help the comprehensive development of the country's economy,” Najib said.
