SUBANG JAYA, Jan 22 — Embattled Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said today that he was not worried about facing any disciplinary action from Umno as he had done nothing to warrant calls for his resignation.
He did not, however, comment on whether Umno should take action against the 14 division leaders trying to remove him as MB.
“I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong,” he said when greeted by 30-odd supporters at the Subang Airport here.
“I don’t have any comment about that,” he added when asked about the move to remove him as the Kedah MB.
He added that he also had no plans to deal with the purported loss of support from the people of Kedah, as alleged by the 14 division leaders.
“No plans just yet. Wait and see,” he said.
The Kedah MB also refused to comment when repeatedly asked if he would meet with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak or where he was headed to next.
Mukhriz’s supporters who were gathered at the airport cheered and yelled “Hidup Mukhriz” (Long live Mukhriz) upon his arrival while holding banners that read “Ansara Supports Mukhriz Mahathir,” referring to the former Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Junior Science Colleges Students Associations (Ansara).
During the press conference on Wednesday in Alor Setar, Kedah Umno leaders led by deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah reportedly expressed their loss of confidence in Mukhriz and urged for his removal as state mentri besar.
They listed three reasons for the move against the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, namely his purported failure to unite Umno and the party machinery in Kedah; the lack of a strategic plan for Umno to face the 14th general election; and his purported failure to govern the state.
Among those present at the press conference were Kedah Wanita Umno chief Datuk Maznah Hamid, Baling MP Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom, Kedah Umno Youth chief Datuk Shaiful Azizy Zainal Abidin, and Kedah Puteri Umno chief Datin Norashimah Md Nowar.
According to Ahmad Bashah’s statement, about 100 people attended the press conference comprising Kedah Umno leaders and the majority of state and federal lawmakers from Kedah Umno.
