SHAH ALAM, Jan 11 — A company, Melwani 2 International Sdn Bhd, was fined RM318,000 by the Sessions Court here today for supplying and offering cheap sale for 3,130 units of imitation branded goods.

Judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid, however, allowed the company, represented by its human resource officer, G. Tiranthini, to pay the fine in six instalments from today.

The company had pleaded guilty to seven counts of supplying 2,858 imitation branded goods, like Prada, Gucci, Channel, Louis Vuitton and Burberry hand bags, wallets, spectacle, perfume and shoes at No: 9, Jalan 51A/227C, Petaling Jaya.

The charge was made under Section 8(2)(b) and Section 8(2 )(c) of the Trade Descriptions Act.

The company was also charged with supplying 272 units of Georgio Armani necktie for cheap sale without submitting a notice on the matter to the Controller, which was a violation of Regulation 3 (1) of the Trade Descriptions (Cheap Sale Price) Regulation 1997 and an offence under Regulation 15 (4) of the same regulation.

The offences were committed between July 22, 2012 and Dec 25, 2014.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Aida Farihan Mohd Nawi.

Lawyers Akberdin Abdul Kadir and Meor Hafiz Salehan represented the company, while lawyer Jasdev Singh Gill held a watching brief for the brands concerned.

Earlier, Jasdev Singh, told the court that the action by the company had affected the good name and reputation of the brands concerned.

“These brands have invested a lot of money to ensure the quality of their goods and service, as well as to market and promote the products. Millions worth of investments have been carried out for many years to generate the good name and reputation for the products,” he added. — Bernama
