PUTRAJAYA, Aug 25 — For the convenience of mothers, related parties should consider setting up more facilities to breastfeed in public places, says the prime minister’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

She said developed countries like the United Kingdom and the United States were more open on the practice of breastfeeding and had increased places to breastfeed babies in public locations such as parks, public transport, shops and restaurants.

“I notice that a number of places still do not have breastfeeding facilities, especially shopping centres, bus stations, railway stations and airports.

“In reality, efforts to promote breastfeeding is not only the responsibility of the government and the private sector, but it must be practised by all parties,” she added.

Rosmah was speaking at the launch of the National Level 2015 World Breastfeeding Week themed, ‘Breastfeeding and Work: Let’s Make It Work!’ here today.

She said the theme chosen was highly relevant as there were still obstacles, particularly in terms of workplace environment that did not support breastfeeding.

“This factor causes many women who return to work to stop breastfeeding and some of them find a solution by giving up their promising careers.

“In my opinion, working mothers need the support of employers to create a child-friendly family environment. It is important for employers to provide a special room for breastfeeding and have a milk storage place,” she added.

In another development, Rosmah congratulated Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam who was present, on his winning the MIC presidential re-election.
