KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — National laureate Datuk A. Samad Said has become a member of DAP, the predominantly Chinese opposition party announced today in a bid to draw more Malay members.

The DAP uploaded on Twitter a photograph of the 80-year-old Malay writer receiving a DAP membership card from DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

“National laureate @asamadsaid receives his DAP membership card from DAP parliamentary leader @limkitsiang,” the DAP tweeted from its Twitter account @dapmalaysia. (see below)

DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke said yesterday that Samad, who is also the former co-chair of Bersih, will attend the party’s “Gabungan Impian Kelantan” in Gua Musang, Kelantan today, as an adviser to the DAP campaign.

Gabungan Impian Kelantan is a joint initiative between DAP and several non-governmental organisations to build 40 new homes for the entire village of Guchil displaced by severe floods that hit the state late last year.

Samad had jointly chaired the electoral watchdog movement with former Malaysian Bar president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.
