IPOH, Aug 24 — Amidst the sadness that surrounds the family of Flight MH17 passenger Noor Rahimmah Mohd Nor, there is a sense of relief that they managed to honour one of her final requests — to bring her home.
Noor Rahimmah, 67, was buried at her family’s burial plot on Friday at the Muslim cemetery in Jalan Masjid Lama, Tambun, beside her grandfather’s grave in accordance with her last wishes.
Her sister, Noor Aini, 50, said the location of Noor Rahimmah's final resting place was fitting considering that she was on her way home when disaster struck in the skies above Ukraine.
Noor Rahimmah’s husband, Hippolyte Tournier, had planned to bury her remains in Geneva, Switzerland — where the couple had settled — before Noor Aini intervened.
“He was against it in the beginning but I told him she had always wanted to be buried in her hometown. After discussing with his children, he agreed but with one condition,” she said.
“He insisted that she was buried beside our grandfather at the family’s burial plot nearby the house. Hippolyte always looked up to our late grandfather after meeting him on one of their trips to Malaysia.”
It had all turned out for the best, she said, as Tournier later confided that he was happy with the arrangements made for Noor Rahimmah’s funeral.
“He told me he had no words to describe how grateful he was. He said he was so happy he had decided to bring her remains back home as she would not have been given such a dignified funeral anywhere else,” Noor Aini said.
The couple has two children — Anne Rahimmah, 29, and Johan 26.
Noor Rahimmah had been working in the Malaysian embassy in Germany for more than 30 years and later settled down in Switzerland.
Noor Aini hoped that the families of the other victims could get the same closure that her family received.
“I just hope and pray that the remains of the other victims will be coming home soon so the families can pay their last respects and say their last goodbyes like we did,” she said.
In Kuala Lumpur, the remains of Paul Rajasingam Sivagnanam and Mabel Anthony Samy were sent to the house of Paul's mother, Madline, in Jalan Limau Manis, Bangsar, yesterday.
A wake will be held at the house of Mabel's mother, Theresa Soosai, in Taman Jaya, Bandar Tun Razak between 4pm to 9pm today.
Their funeral mass will be held at the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Brickfields at 11am tomorrow.
Paul’s brother, Patrick, said the family was still awaiting the return of the couple's nine-year-old son Matthew, who was also on the plane.
