KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 ― Selangor Gerakan has warned Umno assemblymen today against going through with a motion to study the feasibility of implementing hudud in the state, as it is against the spirit of Barisan Nasional (BN).

According to Gerakan’s state chapter, the motion was “ill-considered” as it does not have the consensus and unanimous decision of the other parties in the state opposition coalition.

“Malaysians must understand why the country must remain secular, especially in the judicial system that interprets and applies the law in the name of the state.

“We in Gerakan are well aware of the unconstitutionally and impracticality of hudud,” state Gerakan chief David Ang Chin Tat said in a statement here.

“Therefore, we hope our BN partners as well as the opposition such as PAS share our view and concern and uphold the social responsibility by not attempting to table any Hudud bill or proposal that could uproot the status quo.”

Selangor state speaker Hannah Yeoh has confirmed that the study on hudud is among four proposals she received for debate from BN.

The proposal, which seeks to look into the possibility of enforcing hudud in Selangor, was submitted by Sungai Air Tawar BN assemblyman Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik last week.

Ang said that Kamarol had acted on his personal interest in association with Institut Perkembangan Minda, which acts on behalf of Umno lawmakers in the state.

However, Ang also urged DAP and PKR leaders in Selangor to express their stand against hudud in the state to stop what he called “unwanted silence”.

He then asked Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen and Yeoh to turn down the motion for debate.

In Selangor BN is represented by 12 assemblymen, all from Umno.
