KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — It’s crunch time for animal shelter Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) which is struggling to keep their almost 400 dogs fed.

MDDB director Irene Low is urgently appealing for the public to donate food and money as it needs 1,200 kgs of rice and 1,500 kgs of kibble every month.

Its dogs, which are alternately fed rice and kibble, consume 80 kgs of rice on each rice day and 100 kgs of kibble on each kibble day.

The no-kill shelter also buys chicken meat, liver and ground neck to be cooked with the rice.

“If we feed them rice and chicken today, it would be kibble the following day,’’ said Low.

Out of the almost 400 dogs, at least 80 are special needs with some paralysed, three-legged as well as frail and geriatric.

To make matters worse, there’s been an increase in the price of rice and supply of low-grade rice has gone scarce.

“Our biggest nightmare is not being able to raise sufficient food every month,’’ said Low, who added that MDDB members spend sleepless nights worrying about food supply for fear that the dogs will go hungry.

As MDDB depends on people’s generosity to ensure its rescued dogs do not go hungry, she hopes they will extend their generosity and help them feed their dogs.

For transparency, donors can pay the kibble and rice suppliers directly through online transfers.

“This way donors will know where we are getting our supplies from, and that the money they have donated will be fully utilised for the sole purpose the fund raising was conducted,’’ said Low.
