SEOUL, Oct 9 — The South Korean electronics giant has officially announced the Galaxy Round, touting it as the world’s first curved display smartphone. The device, featuring a convex 5.7-inch (14.4cm) Super AMOLED display with HD resolution (1080p), will be launched in South Korea on Oct 10.

The main advantage of the phone’s curved design is what Samsung calls the “Roll Effect.” When the phone is lying flat on the table, pressing on one side rocks the device and turns on the screen, allowing the user to easily check basic information (date, time, missed calls, battery information, etc).

In terms of technical specs, Samsung’s Galaxy Round packs a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and a 2800 mAh battery. The smartphone is 4G-ready and runs Android 4.3.

The device will hit the South Korean market tomorrow, Oct 10, and is set to be priced at around 1.1 million won (RM3,200).
