KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — The per centage of Malaysian individuals who used the computer in 2013 was 56 per cent, the Internet 57 per cent and mobile phone 94.2 per cent, according to a survey conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

In its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Use and Access by Individuals and Households Survey 2013, the department said among the Internet users, 60.3 per cent used the Internet at least once a day.

“In terms of location of using the Internet, 71.2 per cent of individuals use the Internet at home, followed by any place via mobile phone (55.3 per cent) and work place (37.8 per cent),” it said in a statement today.

The first-time survey conducted by the department was obtained based on two aspects — ICT use by individuals and ICT access by households such as computer, Internet, mobile phone and others.

Meanwhile, the per centage of households with access to the computer was 59.4 per cent, Internet 58.6 per cent and mobile phone 97 per cent.

“Mobile broadband was commonly access by households, constituting 50 per cent, compared to fixed broadband (48.2 per cent) and digital subscriber line (1.8 per cent).

“Among the reasons households did not have access to the Internet at home were high cost (24.1 per cent); lack of confidence or skills (19 per cent); not interested (17.2 per cent), time constraint to access the Internet (4.1 per cent) and language barriers (3.8 per cent),” the department added. — Bernama
