KANGAR, May 25 — The Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) are expected to decide whether the aquatic centre in Perlis can host swimming and diving events for the SUKMA in Perlis or if events would be shifted to the Gunung Keriang Aquatic Centre in Alor Setar.

ASUM secretary-general David Chung said the time was running out and the union were not convinced that the contractor would be able to complete the facilities and venue according to the specifications required.

“We want the swimming pool to be safe for participants and ensure times set during the competition can be accepted and rectified by the international body,” he told reporters, here today.

He was met after visiting and inspecting the aquatic centre with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, today.

Chung said ASUM would convene a meeting tonight to make a decision on the aquatic centre because the diving pool was not suitable because the water was not clear.

He added that the springboard and platform rubber installed need to be replaced because it did not meet the international specification, said Chung adding the rubber was slippery and pose a danger to the safety of divers.

The lighting was also not up to the specifications needed since floodlights must meet the 800 lux requirement but those installed are only 600 lux.

Meanwhile, Shahidan was disappointed with the contractor and Public Works Department engineers for not turning up during ASUM’s inspection despite having been informed earlier.

“They promised that the aquatic centre will be ready by today but we are disappointed because it has not been completed,” said Shahidan. — Bernama
