KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — Bursa Malaysia remained higher at mid-afternoon today, but gains were capped by losses in selected heavyweights, dealers said. 

At 3.02pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 8.00 points better at 1,644.46, after opening 3.08 points weaker at 1,633.38. 

Market breadth was negative with losers leading gainers 428 to 280, while 283 counters were unchanged, 720 untraded and 31 others suspended. 

Turnover stood at 750.99 million shares worth RM681.03 million. 

Kenanga Research in a note said the highly disappointing US employment report last Friday that weighed down on the US stock markets would likely dampen domestic sentiment. 

The US economy added just 38,000 new jobs for May.  “Hence, we reckon that the key index is likely to continue trading sideways within 1,620 to 1,650 for the week,” said the research house. 

Of the heavyweights, Maybank added eight sen to RM8.35, TNB fell two sen to RM13.98, Public Bank eased eight sen to RM19.04 while IHH Healthcare was down one sen to RM6.40.

Among actives, AE Multi Holdings added half-a-sen to 16 sen, AirAsia advanced eight sen to RM2.55 and LKL International perked 1.5 sen to 30.5 sen. 

On the scoreboard, the FBM Emas Index gained 24.55 points to 11,486.06, the FBMT100 Index rose 30.86 points to 11,184.90 but the FBM 70 Index slipped 48.24 points to 12,950.76.

The FBM Emas Shariah Index increased 8.37 points to 11,991.67 but the FBM Ace fell 22.25 points to 5,472.81.

On a sectoral basis, the Finance Index put on 15.08 points to 14,292.36 while the Industrial Index was 13.16 points higher at 3,096.42 and the Plantation Index improved 9.22 points to 7,489.80. — Bernama
