KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he was engaging with telecommunication companies to implement “network sharing” arrangements to improve connectivity for all subscribers nationwide.

Fahmi said that while Malaysia’s overall 4G coverage was 96.9 per cent, this was an aggregate of all service providers’ networks and individual firms would have lower coverage.

“Therefore, we need an understanding among telecommunication companies, and to use specific tools such as the Multi-Operator Core Networks (MOCN), which, God willing, we can start implementing around June,” he said at the launch of the “MyKabel Unity Package” project at the Kerinchi People’s Housing Project (PPR) here.

MOCN is a technology that allows multiple mobile service providers to share and use a single radio network.

The technology is currently being used for Malaysia's 5G network and 4G deployments in rural areas.

On the Jalinan Digital Negara (Jendela) initiative in Kuala Lumpur, Fahmi said 5G coverage in the capital city was 97.5 per cent, supported by a total of 769 5G service structures, out of which 721 are operational.

He added that 4G coverage in KL has reached 100 per cent, while fixed-line broadband penetration was 59.2 per cent here with an average speed of 142.2 Mbps.

Fahmi said on February 7 that he had instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to address service quality issues among telecommunications companies, with a deadline to resolve the issues by June.
