KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang should be more consistent in who he considers as infidels (kafirs), Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

He pointed out that Hadi has now claimed that he never labelled the government as infidels, despite doing so in the past.

“I have been labelled as kafir and now he says that he has never labelled Umno as kafirs,” said Dr Mahathir in the ceramah that was attended by close to 2,000 people at the playground of PPR Kerinchi today.

Dr Mahathir urged attendees to reject PAS, and defended his role during the Memali incident, where he said police only opened fire as four of their own had been shot.

He said PAS had said that those who killed the kafirs would ‘mati syahid’ but sadly, the civilians who died had ‘mati katak’.

The Memali incident, which happened on November 19, 1985 in Baling, Kedah, saw four policemen and 14 civilians killed.

The civilians, who were villagers there, were shot by police when they tried to protect religious teacher Ibrahim Mahmud, better known as Ibrahim Libya, from being arrested.

The incident also saw Ibrahim, who was a local PAS leader, killed.
