PETALING JAYA, April 27 ― A local bomoh, or Malay shaman, used a toy gun replete with flashing lights and sound effects to “treat” a patient, according a video of his session shared online.
The man is first seen brandishing the plastic toy as he recites Arabic verses in front of a woman, who is presumably a patient, before pointing the object at her and pulling the trigger.
The gun begins flashing and making sound effects mimicking gunfire.
“Fire! Fire, fire!” goes the gun as he continues holding down the trigger.
The woman begins writhing as he varies the aim of the gun while the sounds, lights, and “Fire!” continue.
The person recording the session then pans to the bomoh's right, to show him tracing circles on the woman's chest using a light from the gun.
The minute-and-11-second video ends before viewers are shown the outcome of the session.
The video posted by Facebook user Aizat Hanafiah has over 371,000 views and over 6,500 shares since it was uploaded on Wednesday.
A quick search reveals that the bomoh is known as Ustaz Raffi, who operates a Facebook page (Perubatan Islam Ustaz Raffi) and is based in Kuala Terengganu.
“The purpose of this page is to enable me to assist people who need help in getting rid of problems related to witchcraft and the removal black magic that uses jinn and demons,” reads his Facebook description.
In another video, Raffi is seen “treating” a different patient, this time using two guns instead of one.
It is unclear what powers the guns possess.
Malaysia's Islamic authorities regularly caution the public against such “services”, but to little effect as evidenced by the continued popularity of bomoh such as Raffi.
